Zehms, 91, of Sherburn, Minn., will be at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Sherburn, Minn., with Father James J. Seitz as Celebrant. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Doris was called to her eternal rest on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 25, 2016, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont, Minn. Doris Margaret Studer was born April 4, 1925, in Jay Township, rural Sherburn, Minn., to Herman and Agnes (Leibfried) Studer. She was the third of 13 children. She attended school in District #56 in Jay Township and later attended Sherburn Public School. On April 27, 1943, she was united in marriage to William "Bill" Zehms at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Sherburn, Minn. After their marriage, they farmed in Jay Township until retiring in 1990, remaining on the farm. Bill died on April 2, 2005. She remained on the farm until becoming a resident of Temperance Lake Ridge in May of 2014. Doris was employed at the Trimont Health Care Center in 1983 as a dietary aide. She was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church. Her faith was a very important part of her life. She was involved with her church, serving as Eucharistic Minister, Lector, church choir, CCW, teaching religious education for 19 years and sewing for charities. She was also involved with school activities, served as a Girl Scout leader, and served as president of the Jay Garden Club. In her spare time she enjoyed playing bridge, "500," poker, and bingo. Doris was a housewife, homemaker, volunteer, gardener, baker and farm hand. She is survived by her children, Richard "Dick" Zehms and his wife, Judy "Kotewa" of Sherburn, Minn., Betty Groves and her husband, Ron, of rural Sherburn, Minn., Bonnie Lee and fianc, Gary Haraseth, of Mesa, Ariz.-Langdon, N.D., Dawn and husband, Carlos Young, of West Point, Calif., Vonda and her husband, Daryl Pettis, of Plymouth, Minn.; eight grandchildren, Ronald Jr. (Shelley) Groves, Karisa, (Travis) Rozeboom, Mark (Shirleen) Zehms, Justin Groves, Tamara (William) Klinetobe, Matt Zehms, Kendra Brolsma, Carson Brolsma; nine great-grandchildren, Katie Eisenmenger, Steven Zehms and fiance, Kayla Traetow, Bradley Zehms Brandon Zehms, Christian Groves, Michael Groves, Madison Rozeboom, Mason Rozeboom and Megan Klinetobe; one great-great-granddaughter, Jenna Eisenmenger; brothers and sisters, Melvin "Duke" and his wife, Gail Studer of Minneapolis, Minn., Jack and his wife, Rita Studer, of Fairmont, Mary Lou Adams of Westerville, Ohio, Lois Mernin of Coon Rapids, Minn., Shirley Hanson of Lakeville, Minn., Susan and husband, Bob Nagel, of Landcaster, Pa., Mike Studer of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Kathy Studer of Mankato, Minn.; several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. He joined the Army in 1942 and returned from World War II as a Captain. He was a member of the American Legion where he served as a Post Commander. As an Adjutant he organized the membership to furnish military honors at veterans funerals. He also served as Commander of the Honor Guard at many Memorial Day Services and whenever the Legion participated in burial services. On October 3, 1946, Don married Ruth Segner at Galva, Iowa. The couple lived in the Gresham area where Don farmed until he retired. He was an active member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Gresham and a charter member of the Gresham Rural Fire Protection District. He was elected the first president of said district and was instrumental in getting the first fire truck purchased. Don was also very active within the community of Gresham serving or chairing various committees and organizations. |
