Obituary | Jan 1900 | ~86 | Death of Mrs. Mary Gordon From a Galesburg Illinois Newspaper Mrs. Mary Ann McDowell Gordon, wife of Peter Gordon, and mother of Dr. W. Tait of this city, died last Saturday evening at her home in Victoria. For many years she had resided in that community and was known to a very wide circle of friends. Her death resulted from old age as she was within a few days of 86 years of age. It terminated three months of steady decline, although last summer she began to suffer spells of unconsciousness. She became unconscious and slept peacefully to her end. Mrs. Gordon was born in Scotland on January 24, 1814. She was the daughter of John and Ann McDowell. She came with her father, and William Tait, her husband and two sons, John and William, to America in 1839 and settled in Copley Township, Knox County. She was first married in Scotland to William Tait, who died in 1843 in Copley township. On March 1, 1845 she was married to Mr. Gordon, a prominent agriculturist who now past 80 years of age survives her. Mrs. Gordon became at an early age a member of the old John Knox Presbyterian Church, three miles east of Oneida which was founded by Scottish pioneers, and she was for many years an active member of it. Until recent years she was in good health. She was a woman of fine disposition and was extremely highly respected. She leaves, beside her husband; James Gordon, near Altona, Herron and Albinus, near Victoria; and Mrs. Lizzie Robson, wife of William Robson of Watage. (These were Peter Gordon's children and hers.) These children by her first husband (Tait) are living; Dr. William Tait, Galesburg; Huston P. Tait, Victoria; two other sons, John and Peter G. Tait are dead. They were members of Company G. 89th Illinois Vols., and they fought in the war of the rebellion. The former died at Chattanooga from wounds received at Dallas, and the latter was killed in the battle of Nashville, then holding the rank of Lieutenant. For him, the Peter G. Tait G.A.R. Post in Victoria was named. Mrs. Gordon also leaves a (half) sister, Mrs. Janet Milroy of Oneida. A number of relatives of her deceased brother John (McDowell) reside west of Victoria. The remains of Mrs. Peter Gordon the aged resident of Victoria were laid to rest in that town on Tuesday. The funeral was held at 10:30 o'clock in the Swedish Methodist Church, and it was attended by a very large congregation. Besides the many old friends of Mrs. Gordon residing in and about Victoria who have known her for several decades, there were present a number from outside Victoria. Present from Galesburg were: Dr. W. Tait, son of the deceased, accompanied by Mrs. Tait (Rhoda) and Miss Mary Tait (Dugger): Rev. Mr. & Mrs. O.C. Bedford, Mrs. Mary Culver, Mrs. John Culver, Miss Jennie Lambert, Miss Margaret McCornack, Andrew McCornack (probably 1/2 brother and 1/2 sister of Mary Ann.) From Wataga there were present, Mrs. William Robson, daughter of Mrs. Gordon; Mr. & Mrs. E. Percy Robson, nephew and niece of the deceased; Stuart Robson, Miss Weed, Mr. & Mrs. George Niles, Mr. & Mrs. Masters, Mrs. Slater and daughter. From Altona were Mrs. McIntosh, and Mrs. Ellen Scott; from Galva, John Scott and Mrs. John Johnson. The church was draped with black and white crepe, hung from the ceiling to each side over the pulpit and across the railing. Calla lilies and hyacinths were in profusion. From the relatives and friends were several beautiful floral offerings. The service was conducted by the Rev. John Rugh. His text was taken from Zachariah xiv., 7. His personal allusions were very appropriate. He sketched the life of Mrs. Gordon and her family, then alluded to the trials which she heroically bore. In the space of only 7 months two sons were taken from her by the ravages of the Civil War, and 2 daughters died. (The sons were Peter and John Tait; the daughters were young Gordon girls.) The burial was in the Victoria cemetery, and the pall bearers were the following: William Leighton, N.A. Milroy (nephew), Manford Mosher, Fred Becker, Luther Hedstrom, John Clark, Sannie Smith, and Lester Olmsted, all of Victoria. |

Biography | "Portrait and Biographical Album of Knox County" A.H. Gordon, a farmer, residing on section 12 of Copley Township, Knox County, was born in that township Oct. 18. 1851. His parents, Peter and Mary A. (McDowell) Gordon, were natives of Scotland and came to America in 1840. They settled in Copley Township, locating on section 10. Here they lived and reared a family of six children, four of whom are still living – James, Mary E., Alexander H. and Albinus M. The subject of this biographical notice remained at home until he was 22 years of age, assisting on the farm and receiving a limited education; he then took up a part of the homestead for two years. At the end of that time, in 1876, he moved onto 160 acres of land, where he has since resided, raising stock and grain. He was married Oct. 19, 1873, to Miss Mary C. Olmsted, daughter of Henry and Catherine (Wilder) Olmsted. Her parents were natives of New York, and she was born Sept. 17, 1855, her birthplace being Delaware County, N.Y. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon have four children, by name, Arthur O., Eva L., John H., and James P. Arthur O. was born Aug. 8 1874; Eva L. was born Jan 5, 1877; John H., Dec. 31, 1978, and James P., May 24, 1882. Mr. Gordon is in politics a stanch Republican, zealously supporting and voting for that party. He is School Director and has a keen interest in educational matters. Both himself and wife are earnest members of the Presbyterian Church, worshiping under its doctrines of faith and showing forth the noble principles of a Christian religion in their daily lives. Mr. Gordon is one of the representative men of Knox County, and for solid and substantial traits of character and nobility of purpose has no superior in this section of the country. |
